Edmonton Wildcats Preseason Exhibition Games 2011

The Edmonton Wildcats kicked off the 2011 season with exhibition games this past Sunday at McMahon Stadium, with a healthy crowd on hand of about 500 people. The first game saw the Edmonton Wildcats take on their cross town rivals the Edmonton Huskies. They played a mini game of two quarters with the Wildcats winning a close one, coming out on top 14 – 13.

The Wildcats opened the scoring with a 3yd run by rookie Shohruh Noraliev after the Cats recovered a Huskies fumble on their 10yd line to set up the first major. The Huskies closed out the first half with a 24 yd field goal to close the gap to 7-3. Second half action saw the Wildcats score their second TD of the game with a 7 yd romp by rookie Tyree Malcolm to put the Cats up 14-3. The Huskies answered back with a 29 yd field goal to cut the lead to 14-6. The Huskies were not finished and late in the half scored a TD on a 48yd pass to Kevin Francis who ran it in for the Huskies first and only major of the contest. The dogs went for a 2 point conversion but came up short with the Wildcats still on top 14 -12. On the ensuing kickoff the Huskies sent the ball through the end zone for a single to make the score 14-13 Wildcats. With time running out the Huskies put one last drive together but came up short on a third down conversion with a huge defensive stand by the Wildcats, to close out the game with the final score 14-13 Wildcats.

The second game saw the Wildcats faceoff against the host Calgary Colts who looked a little sluggish after a lengthy wait from the second game. Through the first 15 minutes, both offenses struggled to put points on the board. The second half saw the Colts post the first points with an 11 yd gallop for a TD by returning QB Jeremy Long to put the hosts up 7 -0. The Colts then kicked a single on the ensuing kickoff to increase their lead to 8-0. The Wildcats struggled to get the offense going and conceded a safety, putting the Colts up 10-0. The home team marched down the field once again but the Wildcat defense came up strong and held the Colts to a 33 yd field goal to make it 13-0. With time winding down, the Colts added a 25yd TD run by veteran Chucks Okafor along with a kickoff single to finish the scoring off and conclude the contest with a final score of 21-0 for the Colts.

The regular season will commence on Sunday August 14th with the Wildcats hosting the Calgary Colts at Clarke Park at 1:00pm.
