Wildcats Face Off Against Huskies

The Edmonton Wildcats head into Clarke Parke as visitors this Saturday night to take on their cross town rival Edmonton Huskies in a match of 2 teams that are 0-4 on the season.

Both teams are itching for a win, with the Huskies coming off a demoralizing defeat in Calgary, losing to the Colts 58-0 last weekend, while the Wildcats are coming off a disappointing loss in Winnipeg 33-21 at the hand of the Rifles. The Wildcats showed signs of improvement on offense last weekend and will need to continue that focus heading into this Saturday’s matchup with the Huskies. Defensively the Wildcats are going to need better results after a poor showing in Winnipeg, by limiting the Huskies run and passing games. This will be a critical game for the Wildcats if they want any chance of getting into the playoffs to defend their PFC Title.

The offence will need to continue their focus with consistency, discipline and sustained drives, which will be the key to the Wildcats success this weekend. Special teams for the Cats will also be a big factor in determining the outcome of this contest at Clarke Park on Saturday.

On Defense the focus will be playing smart disciplined football and keeping the Huskies offense off the field. The Wildcats will be looking for a big game from their secondary which was less than effective last weekend in Winnipeg.

All Edmonton Wildcat practices are at Rundle Park and the players take to the field around 7:00 pm nightly.

Rifles Rumble over the Wildcats

The Edmonton Wildcats rolled into Winnipeg looking for their first win of the season. But the Rifles would deny them that victory, holding the Cats to 21 points en route to a 33 -21 win in front of approximately 400 fans at Canad Inns Stadium in Winnipeg

The weekends contest was important for both teams with the Rifles wanting to stretch their winning streak to 3 and continue their momentum after their win last weekend in Edmonton against the Huskies while the Wildcats were trying to get on track and into the win column.

The Rifles took an early 10-0 lead with Andrew Wiebe 24-yard field goal 5 minutes into the game, then PFC rushing leader Kienan LaFrance would run 51 yards to score his 5th TD along the ground.

The Wildcats would get the next 14 points as Nick Ross took a 14-yard pass from Andrew Johnson with 3:10 to go in the first frame; and then fullback Kendell Kennedy powered his way in from 13 yards to give Edmonton the lead nearly 2 minutes into the 2nd quarter. The Rifles would take back the lead as Matt Lariviere , snagged a 16-yard strike from pivot Ryan Marsch to make it 17-14 at halftime.

To open the second half the Rifles would execute an onside kick perfectly recovering the ball on the Wildcats 45 yd line. The home side would settle for an 11-yard field goal 90 seconds into the 3rd quarter. The Wildcats took the lead for the second time 6 and-a-half minutes later as Lambert took a 25-yard pass from Johnson for the score. The Donovan Kavich convert gave the PFC champions a 21-20 lead.

Winnipeg took back the lead for good as fullback Bryan Giesbrecht ran up the middle 10 yards to make it 27-21 after the Wiebe point after. The Rifles would add field goals from 32 and 23 yards respectively to round out the scoring to make the final 33-21 for the home squad.

The Rifles move into a 4-way tie for 1st in the conference with Saskatoon, Calgary and Regina at 3-1. The Wildcats drop to 0-4 on the season.

The Wildcats struggled on the defensive side of the ball allowing the Rifles to rush for 220 yds and 331 receiving yds totaling 551 net yds of offense. The Cats couldn’t seem to make plays at key times in the game, allowing the Rifles offense to remain on the field. Ray Hurrel led all defenseman with 7 tackles and 14 points on the day while Mike Podloski and Steven Giang each had 4 tackles and 9 points in the contest.

The Wildcats put up 390 yds of net offense with Andrew Johnson getting his first start at QB completing an impressive 16 of 24 for 213 yds and 2 TD’s while the ground game without injured running backs Justin McEvoy and Shiane Runcie picked up 189 total rushing yds on the day. Running Back Taylor Souster had a strong outing, managing to pound out 104 yds on 16 carries to lead the team. Wide Receiver Jerit Lambert had a good day as well racking up 105 yds on 6 catches. The Rifles had 551 yds of net offense with Ryan Marsch completing 17 of 27 for 331 yds and 1 TD. The Rifles running game racked up 220 yds with Kienan LaFrance picking up the bulk of the yardage with 191yds on 26 carries and 1 TD. The home team’s receivers Lariviere and Dean both picked up 130 receiving yds on 6 catches

Next game sees the Wildcats back in Edmonton for a back to back series with their cross town rivals the Edmonton Huskies at Clarke Park on Saturday September 25th at 7:00pm. The Wildcats will be the visitors at the game this weekend.

Wildcats Head East to Winnipeg

The Edmonton Wildcats head on the road once again, to face the 2-1 Winnipeg Rifles at Canad Inns Stadium on Sunday Sept 19th at Noon.

Winnipeg is coming off a bye week and is eager to get back into the swing of things, while the Wildcats are coming off a tough lose last weekend in Calgary. They want to put that game behind them and focus on this weekend’s matchup with the Rifles. The Cats can take away some positives from last weekends contest in that the defense played solid fundamental football while the offense still has some work to do. Coach Durchik will be working them hard this week in preparation for Winnipeg. The weekend is critical to the Cats if they want to be assured of a playoff spot in the PFC. That means they will have to be firing on all cylinders going into the Peg in order to put themselves in the win column.

The offence which is being led by 2nd year Quarterback Adam Senuik was 11 of 33 for 159yds in the game against the Colts. Adam will be focused on stepping up his productivity in the passing department along with better decision making in the contest with the Rifles. To Senuik’s credit he did throw for 3 TD’s in last Sunday’s matchup and made some good reads, but it wasn’t enough to secure a win against a tough Colts defense. Consistency, discipline and sustained drives will be the key to the Wildcats success in Winnipeg.

On Defense, Linebacker Kevin Hanson who is second in defensive points in the PFC, along with Linebackers Mike Podloski and Steven Rae will need to come up large this weekend and be a dominant force in the secondary once again. One of the keys on defense will be stopping the run and putting pressure on the Rifles Quarterback, shutting down the passing game which the Cats are starting to improve on with strong performances from Gabriel David and Rory Connop on the D-Line

All Edmonton Wildcat practices are at Rundle Park and the players take to the field around 7:00 pm nightly.

Wildcats on the Prowl in Calgary

The Edmonton Wildcats head down the road this weekend to face the 1-1 Calgary Colts at McMahon Stadium on Sunday Sept 12th at 2:00pm.

Both teams are coming off a bye week and the Cats are hungry to put a win on the board this weekend. The Colts are licking their wounds after a demoralizing defeat at the hands of the Regina Thunder in week 2 and are looking to redeem themselves against the Wildcats in their home opener. This will be a good test for the Wildcats as they are working hard this week in practice, focusing on disciplined football, which they are going to have to display if they want to come out on top in this weekends contest.

The offence which is being led this year by 2nd year Quarterback Adam Senuik was 16 of 25 for 145yds in the game against the Hilltops and is showing more confidence with each game played. The Wildcats will be looking to establish the running game in this contest and are looking for big things from running back Shiane Runcie in this Battle of Alberta along with the receiving corp led by 2nd year Wide receivers Jerit Lambert and Mitch Richter who are starting to get in rhythm with their Quarterback. Special teams will continue to be a key factor in this weekend’s matchup, with David Berg and Jerit Lambert on Punt and Kick returns.

On Defense the Linebacker corp of Kevin Hanson, Mike Podloski and Steven Rae are a dominant force in the secondary, leading their team in defensive points and are looking to have solid games in this weekend’s matchup with the Colts. One of the keys on defense will be stopping the run which the Cats have struggled with in their first 2 games. Gabriel David and Rory Connop will need strong performances on the D-Line, putting press on the Colts Quarterback and shutting down the passing game.

All Edmonton Wildcat practices are at Rundle Park and the players take to the field around 7:00 pm nightly.

Wildcats Get Topped at Home

The Edmonton Wildcats suffered their second defeat in as many games at the hands of the Saskatoon Hilltops as they avenged their loss in last years PFC final by a score of 27-13 in front of approximately 700 fans.

The first quarter saw the Hilltops open the scoring with a 14 yd TD run by Regan Schuler to put his team up 7 -0 with 2 minutes remaining in the first quarter. After a Wildcat stalled drive the Cats punted the ball away only to have Kit Hillis run the ball back 68yds for the major and increase the Hilltops lead to 14-0 at the end of the first. The Wildcats got on the board in the second quarter after putting a 6 play 51yd series together finishing it off with a 14yd field goal by Donavin Kavich cutting the lead 14-3 heading into the half.

The Wildcats came out firing in the third quarter racking up 57yds on 8 plays and capping it off with Shiane Runcie pounding it in from 3yds out for the Cats first major of the contest, closing in on the Hilltops lead 14-10.

The defense played tough in the third quarter which enabled the Wildcats offense to put another solid drive together of 36yds on 7plays, with Jean Luc Bugeaud finishing it off with a perfect 35yd field goal to put the Cats within one point of the Hilltops. The Wildcats offense continued their success putting another lengthy drive together only to have the Hilltops defense come up huge in the quarter stopping the Wildcats 5 times on the Hilltops 1 yd line preventing them from putting any points on the board.

The Hilltops took the momentum away from the Cats in the fourth quarter with a 19yd TD reception to Ian Miller putting the Toppers up 21 -13. On the ensuing kickoff the Wildcats wanted to regain the momentum as David Berg returned the ball 95yds for the major only to have it called back for a blocking infraction. The Wildcats defense as strong as they were could not hold the Hilltops back in the 4th as the Hilltops put another series together to finish off the drive with an 18yd field goal by Zack Schmitt to increase their lead to 24-13. The final scoring came last in the game as the Hilltops kicker Zack Schmitt put a 24yd field goal through the uprights and close out the game with Hilltops topping the Wildcats 27-13.

On defense Kevin Hanson and Mike Podloski once again had solid games both picking up 12 points on 6 tackles with Hanson snagging a fumble recovery. Steven Rae also had a strong game picking up 10 points on 5 tackles.

The Wildcats put up 321 yds of net offense with Adam Senuik having a better outing completing 16 of 25 for 145 yds, while the ground game improved over last week picking up 184 yds. Running Back Shiane Runcie had 65yds on 13 carries and 1 TD. The Hilltops had 371 yds of net offense with Chase Bradshaw completing 14 of 19 for 170 yds and 1 TD. The Hilltops running game racked up 201 yds with Regan Schuler picking up 160yds on 24 carries.

Next game sees the Wildcats on a bye week followed by a road trip to Calgary to face the Colts at McMahon Stadium on Sunday September 12th at 3:00pm.

All Edmonton Wildcat practices are at Rundle Park and the players take to the field at around 7:30 pm nightly.

Saskatoon Hilltops Come a Knockin

The Edmonton Wildcats will be hosting their 2nd game of the season against the Saskatoon Hilltops on Sunday August 29th at 1:00pm.at Clarke Parke. The Wildcats will be looking for their first win of the season after a sloppy start to the season opener at Clarke Park that saw the Regina Thunder take advantage of numerous penalties and undisciplined play.

The Hilltops are coming off a decisive win at home over the Winnipeg Rifles 51 -14 last week and are hoping to continue the momentum in Edmonton against the Cats. On the other hand the Wildcats are coming off a very poor outing last week and want to put that contest behind them and focus on this week’s game against the Hilltops and secure a win at home. In order to do that they will have to play smart disciplined football. This is a determined football team that has a lot of pride as defending PFC champs. I don’t think the Hilltops want to mess with a wounded Cat. If they do they will have their hands full.

The offence led by 2nd year Quarterback Adam Senuik will be looking to improve on his performance from last week with the passing and running game lead by Wide receiver Jerit Lambert and Mitch Richter who were non factors in the game with the Thunder and are determined to make an impact in Sunday’s contest. Running back Justin McEvoy who had a below average outing in last weekends debacle will be focused on racking up some big numbers this weekend. Special teams will remain a key factor as well, with David Berg and Jerit Lambert on Punt and Kick returns, which are both coming off successful seasons last year.

Linebacker Kevin Hanson one of the bright spots in last weekend’s game racked up 16 points on defense and will need to continue his strong play with support from Mike Podloski and Steven Rae who also had strong outings against the Thunder last week. The d-line will need to be dominant in this game, putting the pressure on the Quarterback and stopping the run with the likes of Rory Connop and Gabriel David looking to have breakout games.

All Edmonton Wildcat practices are at Rundle Park and the players take to the field around 7:00 pm nightly.

Thunder Rock the Wildcats in Edmonton

The Regina Thunder rolled into Edmonton with redemption on their minds and they got it with a decisive win over the Wildcats 32 -14, avenging their lose at home last year against the Cats.

The first quarter saw the Thunder jump out to a 7 – 0 lead after a 30 yd catch and run play for a touchdown by Kolton Solomon from Reid Quest. The Thunder upped the score to 9 – 0 after the Wildcats conceded a safety. Regina finished off the 1st Quarter with a field goal to increase the lead to 12 -0.

The rough start continued for the Wildcats in the second as Reid Quest went to work again on the Wildcats secondary tossing a 44 yd reception to Kolton Solomon for his second TD of the game to send the visitors into half time up 19-0.

The Third quarter saw more of the same as the Wildcats could not get on track, while the Thunder were firing on all cylinders completing an 8 play 62yd drive ending in a 4 yd TD reception by Clay Cooke from Reid Quest for the Thunders 3rd major of the contest, putting them up 25-0 after a blocked convert attempt ending the 3rd Quarter.

The Wildcats finally get on the board in the 4th Quarter as Adam Senuik put together a 4 play 46yd drive ending in a 23yd TD run by Kendell Kennedy to cut the score to 25-7. The Thunder answered right back though on the ensuing kickoff, as Kolton Solomon returned the ball 105 yds for a TD and his 3rd of the game to widen the gap 32-7. The Cats could only muster 1 more score in the 4th quarter with an 8yd toss to Andrew Johnson to cut the lead to 32-14 and close out the game, with the final score 32 -14 for the Thunder

On defense Kevin Hanson had a solid game, leading all defenders with 5 tackles, 2 assists and 1 25 yd INT return for 18 defensive points. Mike Podloski and Steven Rae also had solid efforts in the game picking up 11 and 10 points respectively.

The Wildcats put up only 225 yds of net offense with Adam Senuik completing 7 of 19 for 97 yds and 1 TD, while the ground game picked up 144 yds. The Thunder had 382 yds of net offense with Reid Quest completing 21 of 29 for 304 yds and 3 TD’s. The Wildcats defense held the ground game to 105 yds with Mark Coons picking up all but 3yds of the Thunder’s total rushing yds with 102 yds on 20 carries.

Next game sees the Wildcats hosting their 2nd home game, as the Saskatoon Hilltops roll into town Sunday August 29th 1:00pm at Clarke Park

Edmonton Wildcats Seasoner Opener

The Edmonton Wildcats will be hosting their season opener against the Regina Prairie Thunder on Sunday August 22nd at 1:00pm.at Clarke Parke. The Wildcats will be looking to continue their success this season against the Thunder, where they scratched out a decisive win last year in Regina to keep their momentum going on route to the playoffs, which saw the Cats claim the PFC title, the Intergold Cup in Ottawa and an eventual date with the Vancouver Island Raiders in the National Championship game in 2009.

With a successful 6-2 campaign last year the Wildcats are determined to get back to the National Championship game in 2010 after a bitter defeat at the hands of the Vancouver Island Raiders in Nanaimo. This years Championship game will be hosted by the winner of the PFC Conference. The 2010 season will see the conference being more competitive than ever and the Wildcats will be focused on defending their title as PFC Champs

The Wildcats will have many key veterans returning this year. Wide Receiver Jerit Lambert will be back for his 2nd year with the squad having set team records in several categories and picking up PFC & CJFL Rookie of the year honors in 2009 and should be one of the key factors in Sunday’s game. Wide Receiver Mitch Richter has developed into one of the Cats best receivers and will be called upon this year to fill the shoes of departing Wide Receiver Mike Wojcicki who as moved on to the CIS and the University of Alberta Golden Bears. Running Back and 4th year veteran Justin McEvoy will be a force to be reckoned with this year and is posed to have a breakout season. The Cats have a solid core of veterans and rookies at the receiver and running back positions and should generate lots of offense this year.

Rory Connop and Gabriel David will anchor the defense again this year, with Mike Podloski and Steven Rae establishing their presence in the secondary. Steven Giang will be a force on the D line again this year with a new face on the O Line in Scott Ledieu coming over from the U of A to shore up the offensive front 5. Veteran returning Defensive Backs Miguel Barker and David Berg will solidify the corners on defense while Cole Bishop will be taking over the reigns at the safety position for the departing Corbin Sharun who has moved on to play with The Edmonton Eskimos this year. With the departure of QB Andy Pilon, having had a successful 5 year career with the Cats, 2nd year QB Adam Senik is in position to take over the helm at the pivot position this season. Adam has developed into a strong Quarterback and is set to carry the Wildcats into the 2010 campaign.

This year looks very positive for the Wildcats, with a good crop of rookies and returning veterans. The players are eager to get the season underway and are looking forward to the season opener against the Regina Thunder on Sunday.

All Edmonton Wildcat practices are at Rundle Park and the players take to the field around 7:00 pm nightly.
