Wildcats Head to Nanaimo for Showdown with Vancouver Island Raiders

With an National Junior Title on the line and redemption in their minds, the Edmonton Wildcats head into Nanaimo this weekend to settle a score going back to 2006 when they lost a heartbreaker in the dying seconds of the game in Nanaimo to the same Vancouver Island Raiders. The Wildcats have been waiting 3 years for this opportunity to show that they are indeed the best junior football team in the country.

Quarterback Andy Pilon and a handful of players that are still on this team from that time know what it will take to win this championship. They will be teaching the other players this week that this is the ultimate stage for junior football and to be prepared and ready to take on a tough opponent in the Raiders.

Both the offense and defense will need to be firing on all cylinders this weekend with special teams always playing a big part in the contest. Andy Pilon will be orchestrating the offense with his prime targets being Kevin Wuthrich, Mike Wojicki and Jerit Lambert all of which have had all-star seasons this year.

On defense all star Mike Podloski and Matt Lalande secure the linebacker position with Rory Connop and Gabriel David dominating on the line. All Star Safety Corbin Sharun will be anchoring the secondary with support from all star corners David Berg and Miguel Barker.

On special teams CJFL points leader Ben Hnidan will be called upon to have a solid kicking game this weekend with Jerit Lambert and David Berg, leaders in the PFC on punt and kickoff returns carrying the load on returns.

There were 2 Wildcats that took CJFL players of the week honors from the game in Ottawa. They are as follows:

Outstanding Offensive Player of the Game
Justin McEvoy – Running back – Edmonton Wildcats
Justin was the offensive workhorse on this day as the Wildcats defeated the Ottawa Sooners 31-3 to claim the Intergold Cup and a trip to the Canadian Bowl. He had 106 yards on 20 carries. His longest romp was 13 yards.

Outstanding Defensive Player of the Game
Matt Lalande – Linebacker – Edmonton Wildcats
Matt claimed the defensive honors as the Wildcats defeated the Ottawa Sooners 31-3 to claim the Intergold Cup and a trip to the Canadian Bowl. The veteran from Wetaskiwin recorded 17 defensive points on 5 solo tackles, 3 assisted tackles and an interception.

All Edmonton Wildcat practices are at Rundle Park and the players take to the field at around 7:30 pm nightly.

Wildcats Capitalize in Ottawa to Win the Intergold Cup

The Edmonton Wildcats dominated on defense in the National Semi Final game in Ottawa as they went on to beat the Ottawa Sooners on their home turf by a score of 31- 3 in a lop sided affair taking the Intergold Cup back to Edmonton and a berth in Canadian Bowl against the Vancouver Island Raiders to be held in Nanaimo BC on Saturday November 14th at 1:00pm.

Neither team moved the ball well in their initial possessions & the game was scoreless until the 8-minute mark when Wildcats quarterback Andy Pilon utilized a short field, capping off a 7-play, 45-yard drive, finding Jerit Lambert for a 16-yard touchdown grab that vaulted the Wildcats into a 7-0 lead, the only score of the opening quarter.

Edmonton drove downfield late in the 1st, upping their lead to 10-0 as Ben Hnidan, the CJFL’s scoring champion found the mark from 14 yards away, 2:04 into the middle frame, wrapping up a 9-play, 52 yard drive.

After another frustrating two-and-out, the Sooners offense would rouse themselves as Ottawa quarterback Zack White hooked up with Danny Mullins on a 44-yard pass & run, ending up at the Wildcat 27. The Sooners drive finished on the 21-yard-line as Tyler Crapigna was good on a 28-yard attempt to cut the Wildcats lead to 10-3.

A 37-yard Lambert punt return would put Edmonton on the Sooner 25 and they would capitalize 5 plays later as Liam Dow scored on a 3-yard dash with 2:05 left in the half to make it 17-3 at the break.

Hnidan would hit a 38-yard field goal, his second of the day to make it 20-3 & the defense would force Crapigna to concede a safety making it 22-3 after 45 minutes.

The Sooners were trying what they could to rally, including Crapigna passing from deep in his territory on a 3rd down out of punt formation, but was sacked by the Wildcat defense which came up big all day long, limiting Ottawa to a mere 5 first downs & 77 yards of offense in the contest.

Wide receiver Kevin Wuthrich took a pass in the second half from Pilon in the flats & danced 56 yards for the game’s final major. Rory Connop would drop a Sooner back in the end-zone for a safety to make the final 31-3 to advance to the Canadian Bowl November 14th in Nanaimo.

The Wildcats will play the BCFC Champions Vancouver Island Raiders who routed the South Surrey Big Kahuna Rams 50-14 in the Cullen Cup Final on Saturday afternoon.

The Wildcats had 17 first downs with 239 yds rushing, 106 yds of which came from offense player of the game Justin McEvoy on 29 carries. Andy Pilon passed 173 yds on 11 of 21 for 2 TD’s and 2 INT’s with Kevin Wuthrich snagging 4 for 79 yds and a TD. The Wildcats had a net offense of 403 yds. The Sooners on the other hand had 5 first downs with 36 yds rushing and 90 yds passing with Zack White of Ottawa completing 10 21 and 1 INT. Net offense for the Sooners amounted to just 77 yds.

In the contest the Wildcats took all three player of the game honors as follows:

Outstanding Special Teams Player of the Game
Ben Hnidan – Kicker – Edmonton Wildcats
Ben received the special teams nod as the Wildcats defeated the Ottawa Sooners 31-3 to claim the Intergold Cup and a trip to the Canadian Bowl. The rookie scored 9 points, enough for the win, converting the 3 Edmonton touchdowns and booting 14 and 38 yard field goals. His 9 punts travelled 378 yards, the longest 56 and his 4 kick offs totaled 196 yards with the longest being 57 yds

All Edmonton Wildcat practices are at Rundle Park and the players take to the field at around 7:30 pm nightly.

Wildcats Head to Nation’s Capital for National Semi Final

The Edmonton Wildcats head east to the nation’s capital this weekend for a showdown with the Ottawa Sooners. At stake are the Intergold Cup and a trip to the Canadian Bowl to be held in BC this year on Saturday Nov 14th.

The Wildcats are coming off an emotional win over the Saskatoon Hilltops in the weekend’s PFC final in Saskatoon under less than ideal conditions. The Wildcats are looking to continue the momentum heading into this weekend’s matchup against the Ottawa Sooners. This is the first time that either team has faced each other since 1983 when the Wildcats played and defeated the Sooners to win the National Championship.

Andy Pilon will once again be called upon to orchestrate the offense with the likes of wide receiver Kevin Wuthrich, who led the conference during the regular season with 8 TD catches, along with Mike Wojcicki and rookie sensation Jerit Lambert. Justin McEvoy will provide the running punch, with Liam Dow and Shiane Runcie in support.

On Defense look for line backer Matt Lalande and Mike Podloski to have another dominating game with the support of Corbin Sharun at safety and David Berg and Miguel Barker on the corners.

Specials teams will certainly play a big role in this game with Punter/Place kicker Ben Hnidan being a key factor after posting the most points in the PFC this season. Jerit Lambert and David Berg will give the Wildcats that one two punch on punt returns and should make for an exciting afternoon, if they are able to break loose in the game.

All Edmonton Wildcat practices are at Rundle Park and the players take to the field at around 7:30 pm nightly.

Wildcats Take Player of the Week Honors in PFC Final

The Edmonton Wildcats walk away with all three Player of the week honors from the PFC Final against the Hilltops this past weekend. They are as follow:

OFFENSE- JUSTIN MCEVOY-RB – EDMONTON WILDCATS
The run game would be a huge factor due to a waterlogged & muddy field in Saskatoon, and McEvoy would be a big contributor to the Wildcats 33-20 championship triumph over the Hilltops. McEvoy would run 23 times for 110 yards with a touchdown in the Gordie Howe Bowl muck. During the regular season, McEvoy ran for 526 yards on 113 carries, placing 3rd in the PFC.

DEFENSE- STEVEN GIANG- DL- EDMONTON WILDCATS
The lineman recorded a 14 point game in the championship victory compliments of 1 tackle, 2 assists, 2 sacks, a pass knockdown & a forced fumble. Giang amassed 9 tackles, 5 assisted tackles, 3 batted balls, and 1 forced fumble for 31 DPTS during the regular season.

SPECIAL TEAMS- BEN HNIDAN- P/PK- EDMONTON WILDCATS
Hnidan claims his 4th conference honor of the season. The rookie kicked a pair of field goals from 37 & 15 yards in the championship win. He would also average 37.3 yards on 11 punts under less than ideal field conditions.
Hnidan led both the PFC & the CJFL in scoring with 94 points and averaged 34.5 yards/punt during the campaign.

All Edmonton Wildcat practices are at Rundle Park and the players take to the field at around 7:30 pm nightly.

Wildcats Participate in Reading Week with Boys & Girls Club

This past Friday the Rundle Boys and Girls Club invited players from the Edmonton Wildcats to participate in reading week at their facility. Three of the Edmonton Wildcats Jordan Bierkos, Brandon Lund and Matt Hayward volunteered their time to help support and encourage reading with the young children at the Boys & Girls Club.

The players, attending the reading session at the Boys and Girls Club, read stories to 15 enthusiastic children. At the end of the readings the players asked for volunteers to read stories to them. They received an overwhelming response and three of the children individually sat in front of the group and each read a story. The skill level of the young people was amazing and impressed both the players and myself with the way they were able to read to an audience without any nervousness or mistakes. It was very impressive.

The children came away from this experience with a sense of accomplishment and confidence being able to read in front of a group. They enjoyed the experience immensely and thanked the players for coming out to their facility. They also wanted to wish them luck in the upcoming Conference final in Saskatoon.

Wildcats Lay Claim to Conference Title for 2009

The Edmonton Wildcats came into Saskatoon on a mission to redeem themselves for a playoff loss to the Hilltops back in 2007 and to upset the Saskatoon Hilltops on their home turf. The Wildcats did not disappoint as they put together a gritty performance to win the Conference Title by a score of 33 -20 in front of 300 rain soaked Wildcat fans that traveled from Edmonton on that day. The rain started coming down just before game time and turned the Gordie Howe Bowl into what can only be described as the Mud Bowl. But that did not deter the Wildcats as they were determined and focused on this day.

The first quarter saw the Wildcats go two-and-out on the first drive of the game while the hosts went on a 7-play drive on their first possession, but couldn’t put points on the board. But the Hilltops picked up the first break as a Michael Waldron punt was muffed and Jared Wipf recovered the fumble at the Edmonton 8-yard-line. Mitch Stevens reeled in an 8-yard touchdown toss from Chase Bradshaw on the next play to give Saskatoon a 7-0 lead.
The Edmonton offense would get their bearings, picking up their initial first down 11-and-a-half minutes into the frame and tying the game with a little over 2 minutes left as Kevin Wuthrich hauled in a 25-yard strike from Andy Pilon to end the first quarter.

Hilltops punter Ian Miller would have to give the Wildcats a safety to make it 9-7 Edmonton. On the ensuing Shiane Runcie kickoff return, the Wildcats were nailed with a double whammy as they took holding & objectionable conduct calls, putting them deep in their own end. A 65-yard Hnidan punt would bail Edmonton out of the jam.

Rory Connop would force Bradshaw to fumble, with Miguel Barker jumping on the fumble. That would set-up a Justin McEvoy 6-yard run for the touchdown. On the ensuing play, Ben Hnidan would hit a kickoff single. After a Saskatoon two-and-out, Jerit Lambert would run for 37 yards, but fumbled when his number was called again with Corbin Eskelson recovering at the Saskatoon 2. On the next play, Connop would trap Schuler in the end-zone for a safety. Hnidan would hit a 21-yard field goal for a 21-7 lead and have two cracks at another one compliments of a Lambert 22-yard dash. He would connect on a 47-yarder but a procedure call wiped it out. The 52-yard second chance would be short.

The 2nd half would open with a big bang as Kit Hillis took the kickoff 94 yards for the score to put the champions back in the game at 21-14. The return was the 7th longest in CJFL playoff history. Pilon would find Jerit Lambert for a 49-yard connection and follow up with a 14-yard run, but would be held to a single on the drive as the challengers held a 22-14 lead going to the 4th quarter.

The Wildcats would ice the win three minutes in as Pilon hooked up with Kevin Wuthrich on a 28-yard pass for the major to make it 29-14. Mike Podloski would scoop up a fumble as Hilltop receiver Aaron Haight took a big hit. A 21-yard Hnidan attempt was wide for a 30-14 lead.

The Hilltops would not quit though as they marched down the field and Brayden Klimosko would bull his way in for the touchdown but a two-point convert went incomplete. The Hilltops had another shot, but Matt Lalande struck yet again and intercepted a Bradshaw throw & went for 14 yards which would set up a 16-yard Hnidan chip shot.

Jordan Penner, in his final game, came on for Saskatoon at pivot and would have his first two attempts knocked away. He would find Miller for 27 yards on a 3rd-down gamble and would run for 9 himself, but a give to Schuler on 3rd down went nowhere, the clock ran out & the Wildcats would claim the PFC crown 33-20 and will play the Ontario champions on October 31st.

For Edmonton, Andy Pilon completed 16 of 28 for 226 yds and 0 interceptions, while the ground game picked up 203 total yds with McEvoy running for 110 yds on 23 carries and 1 TD. Kevin Wuthrich would snag 8 catches for 105 yds with a total net offense from the Cats of 422 yds.

The Hilltops pivot Chase Bradshaw was 9 of 26 for 135 yds, 1 TD and threw a pair of picks. The Hilltops ground game saw a total of 112 yds, with Regan Schuller being the leading rusher with 46 yds on 14 carries. The Hilltops had a total net offense of 250 yds.

The previous nights PFC banquet saw 9 Wildcats pick up outstanding player awards along with All-star and Rookie awards. They are as follows: Andy Pilon, outstanding offensive back, Jerit Lambert Rookie of the year and All-star Rookie award, Kevin Wuthrich Outstanding receiver and All-star receiver, Ben Hnidan All-star Rookie Punter and Place Kicker, Offensive All-star Place Kicker, Steve Prodan All-star Offensive line, Justin McEvoy Offensive All-Star Running Back. On defense Steven Giang picked up Defensive Line All-star, Mike Podloski All-star Linebacker, Corbin Sharun All-Star Defensive Back and David Berg All-Star Defensive Back

On a special note this past week former Punter and Place Kicker Ryan Elaschuk from the Edmonton Wildcats signed with the Saskatchewan Roughriders and dressed for the game against the Stampeders on Saturday in Calgary.

All Edmonton Wildcat practices are at Rundle Park and the players take to the field at around 7:30 pm nightly.

Wildcats Head to Saskatoon for Showdown with Hilltops in PFC Final

The Edmonton Wildcats head out on the road this weekend to do battle with The Hilltops for the PFC title at The Gordie Howe Bowl in Saskatoon on Sunday October 18th 1:00 pm. The last time these two teams met was in the PFC final back in 2007 which saw the Hilltops steal the title away from the Wildcats at Clarke Park with a defensive performance that carried them to the National Championship that year.

This weekend’s matchup will be a huge test for the Wildcats who will be out to exact revenge for the defeat they suffered back in 2007 against the Hilltops and to bring home the PFC Championship in 2009.

The Wildcats will have to be firing on all cylinders this weekend though, with Andy Pilon at the helm orchestrating the offense with the running and passing game. Wide Receiver Kevin Wuthrich will be a key factor in the game who led all receivers in the PFC this year, along with Jerit Lambert and Mike Wojicki playing key roles. Justin McEvoy and Liam Dow will need to have a strong running game against a Hilltops defense that has been very tough all year against the run.

As always special teams will be a big factor in this weekends contest with Jerit Lambert and David Berg seeing most of the action. Jerit Lambert led the conference in Kick Off returns this year, along with David Berg leading the conference in Punt return average.

Matt Lalande had a dominating game against the Colts this past weekend in the PFC Semi Final contest and will be looking to continue that success against the Hilltops this weekend with the support of Mike Podloski, Gabriel David, Rory Connop and Corbin Sharun who led the PFC in interceptions this year with 5, anchoring the secondary.

MATT LALANDE PFC DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
It was a record setting Sunday in the Edmonton snow for the 3-year-veteran as he intercepted 2 Calgary passes and returned both for touchdowns in the Wildcats 35-20 victory. His first major came on a 57-yard 1st quarter dash and followed that up with a 20-yard return the gave the home side a 22-14 lead & much needed breathing room.
The pair of scores set a new PFC playoff record for interception touchdowns in a game and tied the existing CJFL record which was first set by Larry Wilson of the Burlington Braves on November 7, 1971.

All Edmonton Wildcat practices are at Rundle Park and the players take to the field at around 7:30 pm nightly.
