Edmonton’s Win over the Colts, The Cats Meow

In less than ideal weather conditions the Edmonton Wildcats won the Battle of Alberta in a PFC Semi Final rematch over the Calgary Colts by a score of 35 -20 and put themselves into the PFC Final against the Saskatoon Hilltops, who won their game 30-24 over the Regina Thunder in the other Semi Final contest this afternoon.

The Wildcats would bust out of the blocks at the 2:40 mark of the opening quarter as LB Matt Lalande would get his 1st of 2 interceptions at the Edmonton 53 & take it all the way back 57 yds for a 7-0 lead.

But the lead would disappear in a flash as Calgary kick-returner Robbie Morgan took a Ben Hnidan kick 100 yds for a tying score. Hnidan would be wide on a 34 yd field goal try to give the Cats an 8-7 lead at the end of the first.

The one score in the second quarter would come at the 11:07 mark as the Colts pivot Jeremy Long capped off a 6 play 77 yd drive with a 1 yd plunge to give the visitors a 14-8 lead heading into the locker room.

After halting Calgary on their first drive of the second half with a fumble recovery, the Wildcats took advantage of a short field with Justin McEvoy putting Edmonton back in front to stay 15-14, thanks to a 3 yd run for the major. A little over a minute later Matt Lalande would get his 2nd interception and take it 20 yds for his 2nd TD of the afternoon and a 22-14 lead. That 2nd score gave Lalande ownership of the PFC record and a share of the CJFL mark for interception touchdowns in a playoff game.

Calgary responded with an 8 play, 80 yd drive which ended with a Kevan Hafichuk chip shot from 13 yds out to cut the deficit to 5. Hnidan would connect from 35 yds away to give Edmonton an 8 point lead, but Hafichuk would hit his 2nd placement from 26 yds out on the final play of the 3rd quarter to cut the lead to 25 -20.

In the 4th quarter an early Wildcat drive yielded Hnidan his 2nd field goal of the game to restore the 8 point edge. Then McEvoy would send his club to the title game with his 2nd major score on a 3 yd run to give Edmonton a 35 -20 victory.

It was not a great day for any of the 3 passers as neither threw for a major score. For Edmonton, Andy Pilon completed 10 of 25 for 105 yds and 1 interception, while the ground game picked up 164 total yds with McEvoy running for 47 yds on 12 carries. Kevin Wuthrich would snag 6 catches for 71 yds with a total net offense from the Cats of 259 yds.

The Colts pivot Jeremy Long was 6 of 11 for 100 yds and threw a pair of picks, while Clayton Masikewich would be 6 of 18 for 70 yds and 3 interceptions. The Colts ground game saw a total of 123 yds, with Long being the leading rusher with 62 yds on 8 carries. The Colts had a total net offense of 255 yds.

Next game sees the Wildcats heading to Saskatoon for the PFC Final against the Hilltops at the Gordie Howe Bowl on Sunday October 18th 1:00pm

All Edmonton Wildcat practices are at Rundle Park and the players take to the field at around 7:30 pm nightly.

Wildcats Host PFC Semi Final Rematch Against The Colts

The Edmonton Wildcats head into the post season this weekend with a semi final rematch in the Battle of Alberta against their provincial rivals, the Calgary Colts. Last year they faced off in Calgary and ended up losing a heartbreaker 28 -21 to the Colts.

The Wildcats will be out this weekend to exact revenge on their southern foe in the quest to claim another PFC title. The regular season saw the 2 teams split their contest with Edmonton winning their home opener against the Colts 35 -21, while the Colts won their rematch against the Wildcats in Calgary 24 -10.

It will be a tough battle this weekend and the Wildcats will have to bring their “A” game if they want to advance to the next round. Andy Pilon has been very consistent all year and looks to continue that momentum utilizing the passing game with the likes of Jerit Lambert, Kevin Wuthrich and Mike Wojicki. Running the ball will be an important part of the game plan with Justin McEvoy and Liam Dow handling most of the load.

The Wildcat defense has been dominant all year and will need to come up big this weekend against the Colts potent passing attack. The Wildcats Special teams have also been a big factor this season and should prove to be a key element in the upcoming matchup this weekend.

LAMBERT COLLECTS CJFL SPECIAL
TEAMS PLAYER PRIZE
Edmonton Wildcats Receiver/Returner Jerit Lambert added the CJFL Special Teams Player of the Week award to his PFC prize for his Week 8 performance in Regina.
In the Wildcats 38-18 victory over the Thunder last Sunday afternoon, the all-around standout took back 5 punts for 117 yards, including a 92-yard gallop. Lambert currently sits 4th in Punt Return Yards with 217, only 39 yards back of teammate David Berg who has the conference lead with 256. Lambert leads the PFC in Kickoff Return Yards with 301, and can accomplish the rare double of capturing both categories in Saturday night’s 7pm MDT regular season finale against the Edmonton Huskies. Lambert is 4th in Receiving with 23 catches for 405 yards & 5 touchdowns on the season.

BEN HNIDAN PFC SPECIAL TEAMS PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Ben Hnidan picks up his 3rd PFC Special Teams Player prize of 2009 by kicking 3 field goals in the Wildcats 46-7 romp over their Clarke Park co-tenant Edmonton Huskies by connecting on 9, 22 & 24 yard tries. The rookie kicker is the 2009 PFC Scoring Champion, recording 94 points on the campaign. That total includes 17 field goals, 8 singles & a conference leading 35 converts.

All Edmonton Wildcat practices are at Rundle Park and the players take to the field at around 7:30 pm nightly.

Wildcats vs Huskies Regular Season Finale

The Wildcats are back in Edmonton to face the cross town rival Edmonton Huskies who will host the regular season finale at Clarke Park on Saturday October 3rd 7:00pm. The Wildcats are coming off an impressive win over the Regina Thunder this past weekend and are currently tied with Calgary for second place heading into the last weekend of the regular season.

The offence will be looking to stay on track in the final game and to continue the momentum they have created over the last few weeks heading into the playoffs. Andy Pilon will be calling on receivers Kevin Wuthrich, Mike Wojcicki and Jerit Lambert to carry the aerial attack, with running backs Justin McEvoy and Liam Dow picking up the ground game. Special teams have been a factor with the Wildcats all season and this weekend’s matchup should be no different with the likes of Jerit Lambert and David Berg on Kick-off and Punt returns. Ben Hnidan who leads the conference with 80 points will also be a special team’s force to recon with in this weekends contest.

Mike Podloski is coming off a solid defensive game against the Thunder as he accumulated 16 points with 6 tackles, 5 assists and 1 pass knocked down followed closely by 4 other defensive players, Miguel Barker, Danny Rice, Neil King and Dylan Little, all of which posted 12 points each on defense.

Special Teams Player of the Week
Jerit Lambert has just about done it all this season. Seeing action primarily as a receiver, he’s also seen action at running back, but is one of the best return men in the conference. In Sunday’s 38-18 road win in Regina, he returned a punt 92 yards for a major score, moving into 4th in the PFC in punt return yards with 217, only 39 behind teammate David Berg. Lambert leads the conference in kickoff return yards with 307, 105 of which came on a touchdown run in the Week 1 win over Calgary.

Next game will be determined once the regular season is over and the play off schedule is set for next week.

All Edmonton Wildcat practices are at Rundle Park and the players take to the field at around 7:30 pm nightly.

Wildcats Host Football Theme Week with Boys & Girls Club

This past week ago Friday 19 of the Edmonton Wildcats hosted a mini skills session at their Club house with 15 kids from the Rundle Boys & Girls Club. It was football Theme week for the facility with a perfect afternoon set up for the kids as the Wildcats put them through some drills with passing, kicking, running and tackling routines, finishing it off with an obstacle course competition at the end of the day.

A couple of players spoke about their careers on how they started playing, what keeps them motivated, what is important to them about being part of a team and most importantly their education and how football has help them achieve their goals. Both the players and the kids had a great time and bonded with each other immediately.

The kids came away from this experience with a renewed sense of optimism for their futures and a few have already come back down to the football field during the week to watch the Wildcat practice. The players came away with a sense of pride with being able to contribute and to help support the Boys and Girls Club and their community.

Reading week for the Rundle Boys & Girls club will be starts up next month and the support workers have requested a couple of Wildcat players attended a reading session to read stories to the kids during this. Stay tuned for that stories later next month.
