Wildcats Roughed Up in Calgary

The Edmonton Wildcats were handed their second straight loss of the season by the Calgary Colts on Saturday night at McMahon Stadium in front of approximately 750 people. The Colts jumped out to an early lead on their first possession with a 35 yd field goal, but the Wildcats couldn’t answer back as they had miserable field position for most of the first quarter. The Colts then went to work on the Wildcats secondary by tossing a 60 yd TD pass to Jake Hardy to put the Colts up 10 – 0 at the end of the first. In the second quarter the Wildcats started to show signs of getting back in the game with a 40 yd pass to Kevin Wuthrich to set up a Ben Hnidan 16 yd field goal to cut the lead to 10 – 3. The Colts were not phased though and put together some key drives before the half putting 2 field goals through the uprights and a single to make it 17- 4 after 30 minutes.

The Wildcats couldn’t get on track on offense in the first quarter managing only 2 first downs by the time the quarter was done. The Wildcat defense kept them in the first half with a fumble recovery by Corbin Sharun and an interception in the 3rd quarter but the Wildcats couldn’t capitalize on their opportunities.

The frustration continued for the Wildcats in the 3rd quarter as Jerit Lambert ran a punt return back 110yds for a touchdown only to be called back for an illegal block. The Colts picked up another fumble recovery before the end of the 3rd and capitalized on a 5yd TD toss to Ryan McDermit to increase their lead to 24 – 4. The Wildcats shut the door in the 4th quarter on defense with an interception by Tanner Lestus but it wasn’t enough as the Wildcats were only able to muster up another field goal this time a boomer by Ben Hnidan from 47yds to make the final score, Colts 24 and the Wildcats 10.

The Colts put together 384yds of net offence with Masikewich completing 18 of 39 for 288 yds, while the ground game picked up 138 yds. The Wildcats struggled on offense and were only able to muster up 296 yds of net offense with Pilon completing 14 of 31 for 172 yds while McEvoy rushed 101 yds on 25 carries yds with a team net of 138yds on the ground.

Wildcats Hit the Road to Face the Colts

The Edmonton Wildcats travel to Calgary this weekend to take on the Calgary Colts on Saturday August 29th 7:00pm at McMahon Stadium. A win on Saturday will keep them on top in the PFC standings and restore their confidence after a tough loss to the Saskatoon Hilltops this past weekend.

After putting away the Calgary Colts 35 – 21 in their season opener earlier this month the Wildcats will be out to prove that they are indeed the best team in the PFC.

With strong outings from Kevin Wuthrich and Jerit Lambert over the past couple of games QB Andy Pilon will be looking to exploit the Calgary defense with their potent offense while relying on their defensive secondary to shut down the passing game and control the line of scrimmage with the likes of Mike Podloski, Gabriel David and Rory Connop.

Specials teams will be a key in the matchup this weekend with David Berg leading the PFC in punt returns while on defense, Mike Podloski is second in defensive points.

With Kevin Wuthrich tied for the lead with 4 TD’s and Andy Pilon leading the conference with a 101.2 passer rating it should make for an interesting game on Saturday.

Next game sees the Wildcats at home, taking on the Winnipeg Rifles in a rematch Sunday September 6th 12:00pm at Clarke Park

All Edmonton Wildcat practices are at Rundle Park and the players take to the field at around 7:30 pm nightly.
