Edmonton Wildcats Host the Hilltops

The Edmonton Wildcats host their second home game of the season against the Saskatoon Hilltops at Clarke Park on Saturday August 22nd at 7:00 pm. The Hilltops are coming off an upset lose at the hands of the Regina Thunder this past Saturday and will be out to right the ship and prevent 2 loses in a row. The Wildcats on the other hand are coming off a blowout win against the Winnipeg Rifles and are riding a 2 game winning streak heading into this weekend’s matchup.

The offence led by Andy Pilon is looking to continue the success they had in Winnipeg with the running and passing game while controlling the line of scrimmage on both sides of the ball.

The defense has been solid stopping the running game again this year and look as good if not better than last year with Mike Podloski racking up 19 points on 9 tackles to lead the team this past week against Winnipeg.

As a special note Defensive Back and Return Specialist David Berg received another recognition this past week from the CJFL in the season opener against Calgary.

Edmonton Wildcats Jersey Night

The Edmonton Wildcats hosted Jersey Night in the Green and Gold room at Commonwealth Stadium on Friday night introducing the Edmonton Wildcats 2009 roster with approximately 100 people in attendance.

Team captains for this year’s season are Mike Wojicki and Shawn Doll on Offense, Neil King, Gabriel David and Dylan Graf on Defense. Also introduced was the return of Wide Receiver Kevin Wuthrich who has been cleared by the Edmonton Eskimos at Kevin’s request, to play for the Wildcats this season. Great news to start the 2009 campaign.

A bit of community news to send your way, on June 20, 2009 Liam Mahoney and Dylan Graff took the time to prepare, serve and entertain 8 football fans in the name of fundraising.

These great young men had supplied a Gourmet BBQ event for a silent auction to raise funds to start an Atom program in Wetaskiwin under the Wetaskiwin and District Amateur Football program.

The winner that contacted us was fortunate enough to be the highest bidders. They all met at Miquelon Provincial Park and were treated to an amazing meal planned and prepared by our very own Liam Mahoney and served and entertained by Dylan Graff.

The person that won this silent auction wanted to let us know how well they represented the Edmonton Wildcats! They have been Wildcats fans for a number of years and enjoy bringing up and coming high school football players to watch our games. They are so thrilled to have had the opportunity to spend some time with these two great athletes and young men. Fantastic job guys!

Edmonton Wildcats Season Opener

The Edmonton Wildcats will be hosting the Calgary Colts at Clarke Park this Saturday August 8th at 7:00pm.The Wildcats will be looking for redemption after a heartbreaking lose to the Colts in the first round of the playoffs last season.

With a 4-3-1 season last year and losing in the first round of the play-offs to the Calgary Colts the Wildcats are eager to get back on the field this year to prove that they are a better team than what they showed last year.

The Wildcats are looking forward to the return of many key veterans. Wide receiver Mike Wojicki will be back for his 5th and final year with the squad and will be called upon this year to fill the shoes of departing wide receiver Kevin Wuthrich who was signed to the Edmonton Eskimos practice rooster this year. Matt Lalande, Corbin Sharun and Neil King will be back with the team and will be a key part of the defensive core. Gabriel David and Rory Connop will be picking up the slack on the defensive side of the ball with the departure of Jesse Schryver who is heading to Manitoba this year to join the Manitoba Bison and to continue on with his education.

Any Pilon will be back this year looking to improve on last years record and is excited with the new crop of rookies that have come to camp. With the likes of rookie receiver Jared Lambert and rookie running back Shiane Runcie the Wildcats look to have a potent offense this season both on the ground and in the air. Rookie Quarterback Adam Senik is coming along nicely and will be backing up Andy this season. He as a great arm is starting to get comfortable with the Wildcats playbook.

The 2009 season looks very bright for the Wildcats this year with a good crop of rookies and returning veterans. The players are eager to get the season underway and are looking forward to the season opener against the Calgary Colts, while focused on improving their record from last year.

Kevin WuthrichCONGRATULATION! goes out to one of our own, Kevin Wuthrich who was successful in making the Edmonton Eskimos Practice rooster. We wish you great success Kevin. It’s going to be just a matter of time before we will see you on the field with the Green and Gold.

Ryan Elaschuk had a great Eskimos Camp but fell short of making the squad, being one of the final cuts leading into the regular season. This isn’t the end for Ryan though as he pursuing other opportunities and it won’t be long before we see Ryan on the football field again. Good Luck Ryan we know you will be successful.
