Wildcats Host Cross Town Rival Huskies

The Edmonton Wildcats are at home this weekend to host the 0-4 Edmonton Huskies this Saturday at Clarke Stadium, start time 7:00pm in what has been called the Black and Blue game. The Wildcats control their own destiny in making the post season as they head into Saturdays contest with their cross town rivals. This is the most important game of the year for the Cats and they will need to be firing on all cylinders if they want to secure a win this weekend.

Offensively the Wildcats will need to be sharp and control the line of scrimmage with 5th year O-Lineman Logan Trachuk leading the way. The running game of 2nd year Taylor Souster will be a key factor in the Wildcats getting off to a good start on Saturday. Wide Receiver Ryan Smith had a great second half of the game in the contest against the Rifles 2 weeks ago hauling in 13 catches for 134yds and will be looking for that same kind of productivity this weekend.

Defensively the Cats will need to dominant the line shutting down the running game while putting pressure on the quarterback with veteran Steven Giang and Kevin Hanson leading the way. Locking down the secondary will be Zack Brown, Kris Gibson, Sam Badre and Brendan Fair. Special teams as always will be one of the keys to success on Saturday. The team is well rested after the bye week and is hungry to get back at it this weekend.

Next game sees the Wildcats hit the road to face the Saskatoon Hilltops at the Gordie Howe Bowl in Saskatoon, Sunday Sept 25th game time 1:00pm.

Wildcats Gunned Down By Rifles

The Edmonton Wildcats continued their losing streak as they were handed a 54-13 defeat and saw their record dropped to 0- 4 while the Rifles record improved to 3-1 this past weekend at Clarke Stadium in front of approximately 450 fans.

The Rifles got out of the gates fast as Quarterback Ryan Marsh hit Matt Lariviere for a 15yd TD on route to a 3 TD first quarter to put the Rifles up 21 -0 . The 2nd quarter didn’t fare much better for the Wildcats as Marsh posted three more TDs to go into the half up 41-1.

The third quarter saw QB Marsh toss his 6th TD pass of the day with a 31yd strike to Brett Carter to increase the Rifles lead to 47-1.The Wildcats couldn’t get their offense on track and struggled to make first downs and get any momentum going in the game. The only points the Wildcats could muster was a single point off a Ryan Smith kickoff early in the second quarter. The Wildcats would get a safety as Brad Mikoluff conceded a safety touch 2:52 into the final quarter. Kicker Ryan Smyth connected on a 24-yard field goal. Edmonton would find the end zone in the final three minutes with an impressive drive orchestrated by Rookie Quarterback Jordan Olson, moving the ball 89 yds before Justin McEvoy capped off the drive with a 1-yard run to make it a 47-13 game. Choe Sesay of the Rifles would round out the scoring with a 23-yard touchdown scamper on the final play from scrimmage.

Darcy Park was quoted as saying “We were unable to get first downs against them, that’s been the story of our season so far, not being able to get first downs.” “But there is no excuse for the way we played. We didn’t tackle, we didn’t catch the ball. It was an awful game of football”

Winnipeg had a season high 32 first downs and 622 yds of net offense. Ryan Marsch would complete 24 of 32 passes on the day for 392 yards with 7 majors and 2 interceptions. The 7 touchdown tosses gives him 20 on the season. Alex Vitt was the leading Rifles pass catcher with 6 grabs for 104 yards. Kurt Goodrich had 5 catches for 68 yards, while conference-leading receiver Matt Lariviere had 6 catches on the afternoon for 68 yards. Tailback Martin Hovi ran the ball for 129 yards on 17 carries. On defense, rookie linebacker Donovan Gregoire recorded 9 solo tackles, 1 assisted tackle and a 7-yard interception return. The Wildcats posted 18 first downs and 360 yds of net offense. QB Andrew Johnson was 7 of 16 for 50 yds while Rookie QB Jordan Olson was impressive in relief racking up 15 of 22 for 154 yds. His favorite target, Rookie REC Ryan Smith, was equally impressive as he hauled in 13 catches for 134 yds. Defensively Jean-Luc Bugeaud led with 14 points, while Sam Badre and Kevin Hanson each picked up 12 points

Next game sees the Wildcats on a bye week with the following week at home to host their cross-town rivals the Edmonton Huskies at Clarke Stadium in Edmonton on Saturday Sept 17th game time 7:00pm

Wildcats Host Winnipeg Rifles

The Edmonton Wildcats return home this weekend to host the 2-1 Winnipeg Rifles this Sunday at Clarke Stadium, start time 12:00pm. The Wildcats are coming off a beating in Calgary and a wounded cat is a dangerous thing. The Wildcats have their backs against the wall and will need to win this game on Sunday if they want any chance of making the post season.

Darcy Park was quoted as saying from the Calgary game “there was nothing positive to take from the thrashing that saw his team turn the ball over four times”. We need to be a lot better in all aspects of the game.” “When you’re down 13 at halftime, you rely on the experienced guys in the room to come out and help the young guys make plays. We didn’t do it.”

Offensively the Wildcats need to be able to put sustained drives together and minimize the turnovers if they want to have any chance of beating the Rifles this Sunday. Defensively the Cats need to be tighter and put themselves in a position to make plays. Special Teams will need to be firing on all cylinders as well, while keeping the Rifles offense off the field.

The Wildcats need to get off to a good start with help from 2nd year running back Taylor Souster. Quarterback Andrew Johnson will need to utilize all his weapons in Receiver’s Adam Seniuk, Tylor Henry and Ryan Smith to get the ball down the field and put the Cats in a position to score.

Defensively the Cats will again be relying heavily on veteran DL Steven Giang and LB Kevin Hanson to anchor the defense. Locking down the secondary will be Kael Schryver, Zack Brown, Kris Gibson and Jean Luc Bugeaud.

Next game sees the Wildcats on a bye week with the following week at home to host their cross-town rivals the Edmonton Huskies at Clarke Stadium in Edmonton on Saturday Sept 17th game time 7:00pm.

Rookie kicker Marshall Broom, in the lineup for an ailing Andrew Fabian kicked his second field goal of the game from 36yds out to give the Colts a 13-0 lead heading into the half.

The Colts continued there dominance on offense in the second half with Broom connecting on his third field goal of the afternoon, tailback Cuong Thai Lieu would make it a 23-point lead as he dashed 53 yards off tackle 8:40 in to the third quarter. Third-year back Chucks Okafor would wrap up the scoring 4 minutes into the final period as he found the end zone from 9-yards out.
The Wildcats couldn’t seem to get their offense on track. They showed signs of greatness at times on offense but couldn’t string enough together to post a score on the Colts strong defense, holding the Wildcats to just 96 yds passing with 242 yds of net offense. QB Andrew Johnson completed 12 of 21 passes, but threw a pair of picks. Tailback Taylor Souster ran for 70 yds on 14 carries while receiver Ryan Smith caught 5 passes for 42 yds. The Edmonton Wildcats rolled into Regina hoping to come away with 2 points but were met by a very stingy Thunder defense and an offense that was firing on all cylinders. The weather in Regina was hot and so was Thunder Quarterback Wyatt Catley as he went 15 of 21 for 221yds and 3 TD’s in front of approximately 700 home town fans who braved 32c temperatures on Sunday afternoon.

The Wildcats looked sluggish coming out of the gate as Regina posted the first points with a 10yd strike to Kolten Solomon to put the home town up 7-0. The Wildcats answered with a Ryan Smith field goal of 35 yds with 4 minutes remaining in the Half to cut the lead to 14-10. The Thunder were not done though hitting Jonathan Probe for a 4yd TD catch with a 1:30 left to send the Thunder into the half up 21-10

The third quarter saw the Thunder continue to move the ball against the Wildcats defense putting up a 17yd TD score to Mike Schienbein to increase the lead to 28-10. The Wildcats couldn’t get their offense on track in the second half and the Thunder added another TD and three field goals to finish off the scoring and a final score of 44-10.

Edmonton Wildcats Come Up Short in Season Opener

The Edmonton Wildcats and the Calgary Colts squared off on Sunday with the Colts coming out on top by a score of 9-5 and handing the Wildcats their first defeat of the young season in front of approximately 600 fans.

To say this game was a defensive battle would be an understatement as both teams were hard pressed to get their offenses on track. A rash of injuries heading into the game on the Wildcat squad and a depleted veteran core on both sides of the ball were keys factors in determining the outcome of the contest. The first half saw both teams struggle to more the ball, but the Colts opened the scoring midway through the half with a 35 yd field goal from Andrew Fabian to put the Colts up 3 -0.

The second half continued to see the offenses sputter, but with help from their defense the Wildcats were able to gain field position and post a 29yd field goal late in the 3rrd quarter to tie the game at 3. With less than 2 minutes remaining in the quarter the Colts answered back with another Andrew Fabian field goal of 43yds that just squeaked over the bar to put the Colts back on top 6-3.

The 4th quarter saw much of the same where midway through the quarter Fabian kicked his third field goal of the day from 25yds out to increase the lead to 9-3. With time winding down the Wildcats defense held the Colts deep in their end and forced a 2 point safety to cut the Colts lead to 9-5. The Wildcats had one final opportunity to come back to win it with backup QB Jordan Olson at the controls, putting their best drive of the game together marching the ball from their own 32 yd line to the Colts 23, but on 3rd and 2 the Wildcats fell short as Olson slipped trying to eluded the rush, bring an exciting finish to the game, with the Colts escaping with at 9-5 win.

On defense Kevin Hanson and Steven Giang had solid games, while the secondary had a strong outing from Kael Schryver, Zack Brown and Kris Gibson limiting the Colts offense to 3 field goals.

The Wildcats posted 159 yds of net offense with Andrew Johnson completed 3 of 13 attempts for 41 yds while Jordan Olson was 3 for 5 for 22yds. The ground game saw Taylor Souster carry most of the load carrying 24 times for 79 yds. The Colts had 207 yds of net offense with Jeremy Long completing only 1 of 4 for 18yds, while Clayton Masikewich completed 3 of 11 for 70yds. The Colts running game racked up 179 yds with D.J Whetton picking up a good portion of the yds carrying the ball 12 times for 99yds

Next game sees the Wildcats heading next door to Saskatchewan to take on the Regina Thunder at Mosaic Stadium in Regina on Sunday August 21st at 1:00pm.

All Edmonton Wildcat practices are at Rundle Park and the players take to the field at around 7:30 pm nightly.
