Hilltops Over Power Wildcats in PFC Semi Final

The Wildcats came into Sunday’s tilt looking to avenge a lose at home a couple of weeks ago against the Hilltops and advance to the PFC final. These two teams last faced off in the playoffs in 2009, when the Wildcats downed Saskatoon 33-20 in the PFC Championship Game.

Both teams had a difficult time moving the ball in the opening quarter as the Hilltops couldn’t go anywhere on their first drive. The Wildcats did have some success on their first drive until Michael Waldron intercepted a Taylor Yaremchuk pass. The turnover production continued as Hilltop backup pivot Jared Andreychuk fumbled a snap and the Wildcats recovered. Yaremchuk moved the Cats deep into Saskatoon territory; however Ben Cressman thwarted the drive as he picked off the pass at the 2 and rambled 44 yards to give Saskatoon breathing space. But the Toppers couldn’t move the ball on the drive and had to punt it away. However Tyler Henry couldn’t find the handle and the loose ball rolled into the Edmonton end zone where Brennen Thorpe dove on it to put the home side up 7-0.

The Cats got on the board in the last 5 seconds of the frame as Ideen Samadi’s 31-yard field goal try was wide and the Hilltops conceded a single. Both offenses had a hard time moving the ball in the second stanza and the 7-1 score held until the 9:40 mark when Zach Schmidt boomed a 57-yard punt single to make it 8-1. Schmidt rounded out the first half scoring with an 11-yard field goal to put Saskatoon ahead by 10 at halftime.

The Wildcats had the ball to begin the second half but the kickoff was fumbled and Reid Hnidy recovered at the Edmonton 37, but the Hilltops couldn’t cash in on the error. However turnovers were the Wildcats downfall on the day as they would fumble on their 3-yard line and Derrick Sorenson recovered. One play later Tom Shockey would take a handoff and score untouched on a 3-yard run to make it 18-1. From there, things went from bad to worse for the Wildcats. A fumbled snap on a David Ness punt was recovered by the Hilltops and from there, Brendon Gryba made it 25-1. Schmidt added a field goal, and then after a fumbled kickoff return which gave the Hilltops the ball again, Gryba ran 33 yards down to the 5 and on the next play Andreychuk scampered 5 yards for the score to put the home side up 35-1. Wildcats kicker Samadi would make a 37-yard field goal to make it 35-4 Hilltops at the end of 3.

The teams traded touchdowns in the 4th quarter as Wayndel Lewis made it 42-4 Saskatoon as he scored on a 3-yard run. Chase Nahrebeski would then reel in a 9-yard touchdown toss from Yaremchuk to make the final 42-11.

The Wildcats committed 7 second-half turnovers and 11 in the contest. Yaremchuk would only complete 14 of 30 passes for 149 yards and toss 6 interceptions. Running back Levon Hawreliak, in for the injured PFC rushing champion Jordan Samoil, ran 25 times for 232 yards. The Hilltops QB Matt Karpinka went 15 of 21 for 175 yards on the day, while running back Andre Lalonde ran for 128 yards on 18 carries.

The Hilltops move onto the PFC Final where they’ll face the Regina Thunder in a rematch of the 2010 classic.

This concludes the end of the 2012 Season for the Edmonton Wildcats. Thanks for your support throughout the year and we will see you all next year

Wildcats In A Semi-Final Showdown With The Hilltops

The 5-3 Edmonton Wildcats head to Saskatoon for a Semi Final showdown against the 6-2 Hilltops at The Gordie Howe Bowl on Sunday October 14th start time 1:00pm. After a decisive win on the road over the Thunder in Regina, the Wildcats are hungry for more as they strive to get back to the PFC Final and claim top honors in the conference as they did back in 2009.

Offensively Taylor Yaremchuk will be looking for another solid outing after throwing for over 380 yards in last weekend’s tilt against the Thunder, with his favorite targets on the day being Tylor Henry hauling in 6 catches for 126 yards with a TD and a 74 yard bomb to Ryan Smith. The running game has been dominant all year with Jordan Samoil and Levon Hawreluik who is starting to immerge as a great complement to Samoil’s running game. On special teams the Cats will be relying on the leg of Ideen Samadi who led the conference regular season in points scored with 85 and was second in Kickoff average.

Defensively the Cats will be relying on LB Aiden Panchyshyn and Adam Laurensse to fortify the secondary. Laurensse put himself in the record books with 8 interceptions in a regular season, placing him tied for 3rd with 3 other players. Panchyshyn meanwhile is third overall in the PFC for defensive points with 99.5 after an excellent rookie season.

The last time these two teams met at the Gordie Howe Bowl was last year in the regular season campaign and it was a close defensive battle with the Hilltops coming out on top 10-7. These are 2 evenly matched teams and should make for another exciting and close game this weekend.

All Edmonton Wildcat practices are at Rundle Park and the players take to the field at around 7:30 pm nightly.

Wildcats Finish Off Regular Season with Win Over The Thunder

The Edmonton Wildcats finished off a solid regular season with a win over the Regina Thunder on the road at Mosaic Stadium to lock down third place in the Division and a 5-3 record after beating the home team 27-15. They will now head to Saskatoon to face the Hilltops in a Semi Final Playoff match next Sunday at the Gordie Howe Bowl.

The lone score of the first quarter came when a Ben Koot field goal try went wide and the Cats conceded a single point. The scoring would pick up in the second quarter as heavy at times rain came down at Mosaic Stadium. Ideen Samadi was good on his first of two 3-pointers from 40 yards out to give Edmonton a 3-1 edge. Tyler Yaremchuk, who is guiding the Wildcat offense in the absence of starter Jordan Olson who’s sidelined with a broken wrist, put the Wildcats up 10-1 as he called his own number and ran 5 yards for the touchdown with under 3 minutes remaining in the frame. Yaremchuk completed 17 of 32 for 388 yards.

Camille Lagimodiere rallied Regina a minute later as he was all by his lonesome as he gathered an Asher Hastings pass for a 15-yard touchdown to pull the Thunder to within 2 at 10-8. Hastings passed for 363 yards on the day. But just as quickly, the Wildcats added to their lead as Levon Hawreliak scored on a 1-yard TD run 45 seconds after the Lagimodiere score. Samadi added his second field goal to make it 20-8 Edmonton at halftime.

The Wildcats put the finishing touches on third place as Tylor Henry, who had 6 catches for 126 yards scored on a 36-yard major to make it 27-8 Edmonton after 3. Regina showed a spark as veteran pass catcher Will Heward reeled in a 72-yard pass from Hastings, who left the game with an arm injury to make it 27-15. But it would be too little, too late for Regina as they finish the year at 4-4 and meet Calgary in a semi-final contest next weekend. The 5-3 Wildcats head to Saskatoon in the other semi-final

Next week sees the Wildcats on the road again, has the Saskatoon Hilltops Host the Semi Final Playoff game against the Edmonton Wildcats at the Gordie Howe Bowl on Sunday October 14th. Time to be determined.

All Edmonton Wildcat practices are at Rundle Park and the players take to the field at around 7:30 pm nightly.

Wildcats Regular Season Finale Against The Thunder

The 4-3 Edmonton Wildcats take to the road and head next door to visit the 4 -3 Regina Thunder at Mosaic Stadium in Regina on Sunday Oct 7th at 1:00 pm where they will be fighting for 3rd place in the division where they are currently tied with the Thunder. The Wildcats are coming off a disappointing loss to the Hilltops and want to get back to their winning ways against the Thunder heading into the Playoffs. Meanwhile the Thunder are coming off a close contest against the Rifles last weekend and will be looking to continue their winning streak.

Offensively Jordan Samoil will be looking to rebound from a game that saw the Hilltops shut down the run game and limit him to just 37 yards on 11 carries. The passing game will need to get back on track with Taylor Yaremchuk and Jesse Schneider after recording just 107 yards in the air against the Hilltops last weekend. On Special Teams Tylor Henry sparked the offense with a 103 yard punt return for a TD this past weekend, claiming the PFC special Teams honors of the week. He also leads the conference in Punt returns with 419 yards on 30 returns

Defensively the Cats will need another big game from LB Aiden Panchyshyn who had 9 tackles and 1 INT in last weekend’s game along with Riley Aiken who came away with 6 tackles and 2 knockdowns in the secondary. Eliminating the turnovers will be a strong focus in this weeks practice as the Cats turned the ball over 5 times against the Hilltops resulting in 10 points posted by the visitors.

This concluded the end of the regular Season. Playoff dates and time will be determined after this weekend.

All Edmonton Wildcat practices are at Rundle Park and the players take to the field at around 7:30 pm nightly.

Wildcats Take One On the Chin Against Hilltops

The Wildcats came into Sunday’s tilt looking for a share of second place in the conference, but came away with disappointment as a couple of early turnovers cost them and were never able to recover as they went down to defeat by a score of 28-15 in front of approximately 700 fans.

The visitors got off to an early 10-0 lead as they took advantage of Wildcat errors. Zach Schmidt missed on a short field goal try, but the return was fumbled and the Hilltops would recover at the Edmonton 8 yard line. Saskatoon made the Cats pay as Matt Karpinka connected with Brendon Gryba for a quick 7-point lead. Another muffed kick return led to a 42-yard Schmidt field goal over a minute later.

The Hilltops lead would expand to 17 as Tom Shockey barged in from a yard away almost two-and-a-half minutes into the second quarter. Schmidt was later wide on a 29-yard try as he struggled only hitting 2 of 5 tries on the game. The Wildcats would receive a huge boost as Tyler Henry took a Schmidt punt and took it all the way back for a 103-yard touchdown. The Toppers lead was 18-7 at the break.

Any hopes of a Wildcat comeback were put on ice when Andre Lalonde who ran for 202 yards on the day, finished off a drive where he did the bulk of the work, scored on a 3-yard run to salt away the win.

The Wildcats struggled offensively all afternoon as quarterback Jordan Olson sat out after being diagnosed with a broken wrist earlier in the week. The combination of Taylor Yaremchuk and Jesse Schneider combined for only 107 yards passing. Schmidt would hit on a 10-yard field goal, while Ideen Samadi chipped in with 2 field goals to make it a 28-15 final.

Offensively the Wildcats posted only 238 yards of net offensive, with 142 yards rushing and 107 yards passing. Jordan Samoil was contained in this game by the Hilltops defense as he was only able to muster 37 yards on 11 carries. Tyler Henry catch 3 passes for 55 yards while Taylor Yaremchuk was 6 for 15 passing for 61 yards on the day. The Hilltops posted 436 yards of net offense, with 249 yards on the ground and 210 yards in the air. André Lalonde carried the ball 33 times for 202 yards and 1 TD with Graham Unruh catching 5 passes for 57 yards. Matt Karpinka was 17 for 28 and 210 yards and 1 TD on the day.

On Defense the Wildcats had solid performances from Aiden Panchyshyn who posted 25 defensive points on 9 tackles, and Riley Aiken posting 16 points on 6 tackles and 2 pass knock downs. Ryan Migadel was a beast at safety with a couple of teeth rattling hits and posting 13 points on 4 tackles and 1 INT. The Hilltops Defense saw Dylan Kemp record 11 tackles for 22 points while Ben Cressman posted 13 points.

Next week sees the Wildcats hit the road for their final regular season game against the Regina Thunder at Mosaic Stadium in Regina on Sunday October 7th start time 1:00pm.

All Edmonton Wildcat practices are at Rundle Park and the players take to the field at around 7:30 pm nightly.
