Rifles Misfire As Wildcats Take Rematch

The Edmonton Wildcats move to 3-1 and a share of second place with the Saskatoon Hilltops after there convincing win over the Winnipeg Rifles this past Sunday by a score of 42 -30 at Clarke Parke in front of approximately 500 fans.

The Rifles and Wildcats met for the second time in 2012 with Winnipeg wanting not only a measure of revenge for a 34-20 Week 1 loss, but also a win to stay in contention for a playoff berth as they sit 4 points out of the 4th and final berth.

The Wildcats were looking to resume their winning ways after dropping a 28-18 decision to the Calgary Colts 2 Sundays ago and try to get back a share of top spot in the process.
The visitors opened the scoring early in the opening frame with Brad Mikoluff connecting on a 20-yard field goal try, however from there the Wildcats would take control as Brad Quartel hauled in a 25-yard strike from Jordan Olson to give the Cats a 4-point edge after one quarter.

Like they did in Week 2 against their co-tenants the Huskies, the Wildcats had a big middle frame as they racked up 18 unanswered points as they would get touchdowns from tailback Jordan Samoil who found the end zone for the 8th time on the season thanks to an 18-yard dash to daylight & Tylor Henry took in a 10-yard touchdown toss from Jordan Olson after a Ideen Samadi field goal and David Ness punt single. The teams went to the locker room with the Cats up 25-3.

Jordan Olson, who threw for 203 yards on the afternoon, would call his own number early in the third quarter and ran 75 yards for the touchdown that would put the game out of reach. But to Winnipeg’s credit, they would rally in a big way in the final 15 minutes. Julian Banares scored on a 13-yard touchdown pass from John Kiesman, but a two-point convert try was no good. Tailback Jon Waters appeared to put the game on ice with a 9-yard touchdown run, but that was the cue for the Rifles to load up and would do just that as Jason Kelly took the ensuing kickoff and raced 101 yards for the six-pointer to make it 39-15. Another two-point try went by the boards. Then it was Brett Carter’s turn as he caught a 25-yard touchdown throw from Kiesman to make it 39-23. Samadi would make it a 3-score game again, but the Rifles would find the end zone one last time in the final minute as a Kiesman 1-yard sneak into the end zone made it a 12-point game, capping a 27-point fourth quarter, but it was too little to late as the Wildcats hung on to win 42-30

Next week sees the Wildcats head down to Calgary to clash with the Colts at McMahon Stadium on Sunday September 16th game time 2:00pm

All Edmonton Wildcat practices are at Rundle Park and the players take to the field at around 7:30 pm nightly.

Wildcats Horseshoed By Colts

The Edmonton Wildcats and the Calgary Colts squared off on Sunday with the Colts coming out on top by a score of 28-18, handing the Wildcats their first defeat of the young season in front of approximately 700 fans.

With no scoring in the 1st quarter the Wildcats jumped out to a 6 -0 lead in the 2nd quarter courtesy of 2 Ideen Samadi field goals, but that lead soon evaporated as Chuck Oakfor rambled in from 1 yd out to put the Colts on top 7-6 heading into the locker room at half time. The 3rd quarter saw the Colts expand their lead to 14 -6 with a 1 yd run from QB Jeremy Long and shortly thereafter Rodreke Joseph punched one in from 10 yds out to increase the Colts lead to 21-6. The Wildcats rallied in the 4th quarter posting another Ideen Samadi field goal from 33 yds out to cut the lead to 21-9. The Wildcats were not done though as they put together a drive capped off by a 4yd Jon Waters scramble into the end zone to post their 1st major of the day cutting the lead to 21-16. But the Colts defense hung tough and was able to increase their margin to 28-16 as Andrew Fabian found Jeremy Long on a fake field goal try in the end zone for Longs second TD on the afternoon to seal the deal. The Colts gave up a 2 point safety in the final minutes, making the final score Colts 28 and the Wildcats 18.

The Wildcat struggled at time trying to find their rhythm but they couldn’t put any sustained drives together with penalty’s hurting them at key times in the game that stalled drives giving the Colts opportunities to put the game away. They didn’t give up though as they battled back in the 4th quarter with a valiant effort from backup QB Taylor Yaremchuk at the helm but it was too little too late as they suffered their first defeat of the season

The Wildcats posted 522 yds of net offense, 303 yds of which was on the ground with Jordan Olson completing 10 of 22 attempts for 109 yds. Jordan Samoil had another solid day rushing for 218 yds on 20 carries. Rookie running back Jon Waters added the lone TD with his 2 carries for 39 yds. Brad Quartel had 9 catches for 73 yds while Ryan Smith had 3 catches for 53 yds. The Colts had 339 yds of net offense with Derek Cooper completing 18 of 27 for 313 yds and 1 TD. The Colts running game posted only 61 yds on the ground courtesy of a Wildcat stingy defense, with Chucks Oakfor carrying most of the load of 18 carries for 41 yds. Colts receiver Ben Hnautik had 4 catches for 85yds, while Rodreke Joseph contributed 4 catches for 74 yds and 1 TD.

Brandon Jennings led the Wildcat defense posting 20 defensive points on 8 tackles and 1 interception while Ryan Migadel had 6 tackles and 1 interception posted 16 defensive points. Defensively for the Colts Casey Long had 3 tackles and 1 interception for 13 points, while Skyler Pinchak and Stephen Derwnwski both had 6 tackles for 12 points each.

Next week sees the Wildcats on a bye week with their next game at home hosting the Winnipeg Rifles at Clarke Stadium on Sunday September 9th 12:00pm.start.

All Edmonton Wildcat practices are at Rundle Park and the players take to the field at around 7:30 pm nightly.

Wildcats Run All Over Huskies

The Edmonton Wildcats continued their winning ways with a decisive win over their cross town rivals on Saturday night in front of a packed house of 900 enthusiastic fans at Clarke Park.

The Huskies set the tone with their opening drive posting the first major of the contest and adding a field goal to go up early on the Wildcats 10 – 0 half way through the first quarter. But then the Wildcats got rolling and the fans were treated to a running game the likes that have not been seen since Tristan Jones. It started with a drive that was capped off by a 1 yd run by rookie running back Jordan Samoil. Then early in the second quarter Samoil scampered 68yds to pay dirt, his second of 4 TD’s on the night. The momentum had swung in the Wildcats favor as they added a field goal and a 15yd TD pass to rookie Wide Receiver Brad Quartel. Samoil’s third TD came with a 10yd power run into the end zone to put the Wildcats up at the half 31-10. The third quarter saw more of the same with the running game, as Samoil reeled off another spectacular run of 60yds to post his 4 TD of the night and put the Wildcats up 38 -12. In the 4th quarter the Cats running game continued to dominate the Huskies defense as they utilized two of their power backs, Jon Waters and Levon Hawreliak to post 2 more majors to seal the deal. The Huskies added a pair of field goals late and the Wildcats added on of their own to close out a memorable game 55-18.

The Wildcats posted 547 yds of net offense, 452 yds of which was on the ground with Jordan Olson completing 9 of 17 attempts for 106 yds and 1 TD. Jordan Samoil had an amazing game rushing for 309 yds on 24 carries and 4 TD’s, with support from Jon Hawreliak who had 14 carries for 100 yds and a TD. Hidden away in all this was Corner Back Adam Laurensse’s stellar defensive plays picking off 3 Erdmann passes and racking up 97return yds. The Huskies had 385 yds of net offense with Trevor Erdmann completing 19 of 35 for 261 yds and 3 interceptions. The Huskies running game posted 115 yds with Skyler Sargeant carrying most of the load with 11 carries for 52 yds and 6 catches for 66 yds receiving. Wildcats Silence Rifles

The Winnipeg Rifles opened up their 11th PFC season in a very unique way as they hosted the Edmonton Wildcats in “Sunday Brunch Football” as the Rifles kicked off the 2012 campaign with a 34-20 loss to the Cats in a 10AM start.
Ex-Manitoba Bison Jon Kiesman started at quarterback for the Rifles as he edged out 3-year vet Tyler Vieira on the strength of his camp performance as well as his efforts in a 39-32 preseason loss to the Regina Thunder last Saturday in Yorkton.
The Rifles forced the first turnover of the day as Andrew Kleinsasser picked up a Jordan Samoil fumble and took of all of 3 plays to score as Jon Kiesman ran 15 yards to give the home side a 7-0 lead over 3 and a half minutes into the frame.
The Cats would thwart a Rifle drive with an Adam Laurensse interception in the end zone. Edmonton would march the ball 90 yards in 10 plays, capped off by a Ryan Smith 6-yard touchdown grab.
The Rifles replied to the tying score by going on a long drive of their own which was highlighted by a pair of huge Martin Hovi runs including one of 28 yards. The 13-play drive wrapped up with Brad Mikoluff’s 23-yard field goal to put the home side up 10-7. The visitors would drive down the field in a downpour as Samoil ran 10 yards for the major score that put the Cats back in front 14-10 halfway through the sandwich stanza.
Jason Kelly would return the ensuing kickoff 53 yards to the Edmonton 47 but the offense would struggle until Choe Sesay ran 27 yards then Brett Carter reeled in a 30 yard touchdown grab from Kiesman to put the homesiders back in front by a field goal at 17-14.
The Rifles would up their edge to 20-14 as Mikoluff was good on an 11-yard chip shot. After a missed Edmonton field goal, the Rifles marched, aided in large part by a pair of Wildcat penalties for contacting the kicker and unnecessary roughness.
The Rifles went 2-and-out on their first drive of the second half and the Cats would capitalize on their opening drive by moving 72 yards on 13 plays which would end with Samoil’s 2-yard TD run and with the convert put Edmonton back in front 21-20.
Kiesman would fire his 3rd pick of the day late in the frame into the mitts of Laurensse who took it to the Rifle 39. On the first play of the 4th, Samoil dashed 25 yards for his 3rd TD run of the day to expand the Edmonton lead to 28-20. 3rd-year pivot Tyler Vieira came on to begin the fourth quarter.
The Cats continued their ball control mastery as they embarked on another long drive highlighted by a 38-yard Ryan Smith grab in addition to a fake punt run by David Ness. Ness would hit a 30-yard field goal to give the visitors an 11-point edge.
Any shot at a Rifles comeback was denied by the Wildcats offensive dominance as they ate up lots of real estate along the ground as Samoil ran roughshod all over the Rifle defense throughout the second half. Ness added a chip shot of his own to round out the scoring.
After the loss, Rifles bench boss Greg Graceffo said he was happy with Kiesman’s first half effort but admitted the interceptions hurt and his club” made too many mistakes in critical situations to help a good Football team win a Football game”. Kiesman said he & his mates had a letdown in the second half and “came out really flat and we need to turn that around.” He agreed with his head coach when he said the interceptions did him & his club in.
Next game sees the Wildcats take on their cross town rival Huskies this Saturday August 18th 7:00pm at Clarke Park. The Huskies will be hosting this Saturday nights game.
All Edmonton Wildcat practices are at Rundle Park and the players take to the field around 7:00 pm nightly.
